So, I'm sitting here enjoying my delicious Very Vanilla Silk Soymilk, trying to savor it but I just cant help chugging it down. It's a cute little purple single serving box with a supercool retractable straw. Yeah, high tech! The straw is tiny so it fits on the box and you pull half of it out and it clicks into place to be full-size so you can slurp up every last drop of the deliciously rich soymilk.
The box says, "It's Free! Silk Soymilk is free of lactose, dairy, cholesterol...(blah blah blah) and worries!" So I'm thinking, "Yeah, I know! Ain't it great?!" And I read earlier on someone's blog that Dean's owns a soymilk company. I've never seen Dean's soymilk before, so I got online (while still slurping my Very Vanilla) to see what brand is Dean's soymilk.
It...
is...
Silk?!?!?!
I mean, at least they're not so low as to put animal products and processed shit in it like 8th Continent, but seriously, I really thought I was supporting a vegan cause! I still feel good about spending my money on a vegan product so that companies will provide more vegan products, but why does a dairy company have to own Silk?
Does anyone out there know the quality of life their cows live? I know that may be a silly question since I'm not consuming from the cows, but I don't want to support the company if they are an abusive company.
I like my Edensoy too (but who knows who owns it?!), but it doesn't have as many nutrients and is more expensive.
Edit: Okay, I did some research and I feel slightly better. They seem to pass fairly strict codes of humane animal treatment and etc. Plus their site says,
"We also lend vital support to sustainable agriculture organizations including the Organic Farming Research Foundation , which sponsors research into organic farming practices and production systems and educates the public and key decision-makers about organic farming issues; and Holistic Management International, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting land resource management that restores land health and profitability. "
Edit Number 2: Okay, maybe I don't trust them. I have trouble trusting a dairy company that makes my soymilk. I'll still drink it occasionally, but I guess I'll go for tofu and Edensoy to get my nutrients.

Dorm Room Cookin'
I did some almost cooking form my dinner this evening. I took frozen stir fry veggies, frozen boca "ground beef", canned tomato soup, and salsa, mixed them all together, and microwaved them. It's pretty good for dorm room cooking. I can't wait to break out the crock pot and make some rice and beans. Well, what I really can't wait for is to have a kitchen! But that's a long way off from now. At least I have pretty good dining hall food.
It's chilly and rainy here! This weather makes me completely lazy and tired. I wanted to lay around all day but I forced myself to go to classes. My last class is 7:15-8:30 (entirely too late!), so I'm about to leave for that. On my way back I think I'll stop for a hot carmel (if it's vegan) apple cider!

End of the Weekend
The weekend is almost over. Aww. It was a good one though!
Friday night was boring. I don't really like to party (but feel left out when I don't go to parties) so I stayed in.
Saturday morning I rode home with a friend. I got to see my boyfriend (Trey)! I missed him so much! We ate salad and he had chicken while I had a bagel with peanut butter and chocolate syrup for dinner. Then we watched Young Frankenstein and a few episodes of Mythbusters.
I made vegan banana applesauce pancakes for breakfast. I didn't have my camera, but I wish I had pictures!
Then my mom picked me up and we went to the store. She bought me granola and soy milk, which startled me. She never buys me anything!!! And she was very generous in letting me use her stuff to bake http://vegancupcakes.wordpress.com/2007/09/17/pumpkin-pie-brownie/ . YUM!!! I'm glad I went all out and baked those instead of the fat free pumpkin brownies, but I'll try them some time.
I did find my camera cord at home, so perhaps I will post pictures someday. The brownies are much prettier on that link up there, though. Most of my dorm food is pretty ugly, too!
Okay, back to studying. =(

I Like Tea?!
I'll be honest. I've never been a fan of hot tea, and iced tea only when it's packed with sugar. I love my sweetened creamy coffee too much! I got 5 delicious-sounding flavored organic tea bag samples and I tried one today.
Chai Marsala Tea with vanilla ricemilk and blue agave syrup....AMAZING!!! It smells amazing and tastes amazing. I think it might even be a better pick-me-up than my normal morning coffee. Plus it's way healthier! Less caffeine, less acid, organic, and a more interesting flavor.
So, I went for that jog yesterday. It lasted about 20 minutes and I walked a couple times. I went longer than I thought I could (embarrassing!). Today I'm sore!!! My abs and back especially. It's a feel good sore though.
I didn't find my camera cord. Bummer. I think I left it at home, so whoever comes to visit me first (boyfriend or sister) will hopefully find it and bring it to me along with my winter coat, soy protein powder, and bike.

It's a Crisp Fall Day!
It's so nice outside! Why have I been sitting on my but at the computer for over 2 hours?! After I post this blog I am for sure going on a walk/jog!
I am still super duper excited about being vegan!
Today's Food:
Breakfast: plain organic yogurt w/ blue agave syrup and granola; coffee w/ ricemilk; apple
Lunch: Southwest tofu scramble; salad-iceberg & spinnach, olive oil & vinegar, tofu, sunflower seeds, veggies; Edensoy soymilk; vegan peanut butter cookies (I love my dining hall!)
Dinner: salad; vegan stir fry w/ rice; carrots and hummus; honey dew mellon
My dining hall is buffet style and they ALWAYS have vegan food. I love it! I had to ask for the soymilk and they said I either a) had to have a milk allergy and a doctor's note or b)dietary need. I said, "Well...I'm vegan?" And a boy came out and said, "Did you say you want soymilk?" And he brought it out. =) The Edensoy original was great! It was so sweet and tasted flavored. Best unflavored soymilk I've ever had. My rice milk is less calories and more calcium, B12, and D though.
By the way, I've been completely absorbed in a ton of vegan sites. That's why I haven't been outside except to go to classes (which is actually quite a walk). I love the blogs with pictures. I think I might start photographing stuff more often. I hope I can find my camera to computer cord!
Okay, time for that walk!
